Reflections from the 2024 European Public Health Week!

In May 2024, BLISS was presented at the European Public Health Week, annually organized by the European Public Health Association (EUPHA). In one of their online events organized by the EUPHA Health Literacy Section, Lisa Stauch M.Sc. from our project partner Technical University of Munich, WHO Collaborating Center for Health Literacy,  presented the BLISS project during the webinar “Breaking down silos between education and health through health literacy.” The webinar was organized as part of the fourth day focusing on “Health through the life course: Breaking down silos.”

The BLISS presentation highlighted the need to break down barriers and connect health literacy and education with a particular focus on schools and the education system. On this occasion, the BLISS “METHODOLOGICAL FRAMEWORK FOR DIGITAL HEALTH@SCHOOL” was presented publicly to attending audiences through different online channels.

Here are a few key takeaways:

  1. Health literacy is a process, both individually and shared and negotiated with one’s community.
  2. Health literacy is relevant to people of all ages, but in particular children and adolescents represent a critical target group to promote health literacy early in the life-course.
  3. Digital health literacy has evolved into a significant sub-dimension of health literacy and can be addressed in school by using the DigComp and BLISS frameworks.

It is imperative that institutions, governments, research institutes, and civil organizations keep collaborating to ensure that school students` health literacy is promoted through quality education and lifelong learning.
